Emergency Care

Sometimes orthodontic emergencies can happen. While it can be overwhelming, it’s important to stay calm and contact your orthodontist. Here are a few orthodontic emergencies and directions on what to do.

Loose Wires

If the wires on your braces become loose, try to secure them with tweezers. If that doesn’t do the trick, place wax on top of the wire. If you have no choice but to cut the wire, use fingernail clippers.

Sore Mouth

It’s normal to feel soreness in your mouth for a few days after getting braces. Your teeth and gums need time to adjust to the braces. During this time, eat softer foods, like mashed potatoes and yogurt, as they don’t require much chewing. Over-the-counter pain relievers, like Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen, can also help relieve your discomfort. Additionally, gargling salt water can alleviate soreness.

If you still feel pain after having braces for a while, let your orthodontist know.

Headgear

If your orthodontist has instructed you to wear headgear with your braces, it’s important to do so correctly. If you forgot how to wear the headgear properly, look back at the directions. If the metal piece is bent, notify your orthodontist immediately.

Loose Brackets

If the brackets have become loose, call your orthodontist and schedule an appointment. In the meantime, secure the bracket with wax. If the bracket is coming off completely, remove it and put it in a plastic bag.

Food Caught Between Teeth

Although this isn’t technically an emergency, it can cause discomfort. If you get a piece of food caught between your braces, try removing it with a strand of floss. You can also try using a toothpick.

Ulcers

Braces may sometimes cause ulcers to develop by rubbing on your mouth tissues consistently. This can lead to extreme discomfort and even infection. If you develop an ulcer, try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever or rinsing with saltwater. Most ulcers go away in seven to 10 days.

To prevent ulcers in the future, drink plenty of water, stick to a thorough oral hygiene routine and apply orthodontic wax to the brackets of your braces.
